Feiner Empire-Pfeilerspiegel, Dänemark oder Altona, ca. 1800

A veneered and giltwood Empire pier mirror, probably from Northern Germany (Altona area) or from Denmark. Pier mirrors are tall and narrow mirrors intended to fill the pier, the space between two windows, or sometimes surmounting a pier table. The upper part of the frame with a central female bust depicting the strong ideal of a Greek profile surmounted by a large ribbon tied bow and flanked by S-shaped cornucopias. The rectangular mercury mirror pane framed by a finally turned giltwood border and fluted mahogany moulding with the plinth displaying a gentle drapery.
