Großer vergoldeter Wandspiegel im Louis-XVI-Stil, Frankreich, ca. 1860

The rectangular mirror plate is framed by a beaded border, a leave moulding known as a lesbian kyma with foliate paterae to the corners. The mirror frame is surmounted by a delicate cresting adorned with a bunch of flowers with trailing foliate devices above an acanthus leave. The cresting is flanked by urns in Amphora form with square handles, a guilloche running pattern decorates the frieze framed by foliate sprays. The classical motifs used in the giltwood frame design include leaf moulding, guilloche pattern, urns and paterae, elements that reflect the Louis XVI period of the 18th century that came into fashion again at the end of the 19th century. This period can now provide a large whole mirror plate with bevelled edges.
